Summer College Checklist #5: Build Your Activities List & Student Resume
Sooner or later, we all apply for something: a job, an internship, a research position, membership to a club.
Oh yeah — and college!
If you’ve begun your applications, you’ve probably encountered the activities section, where you report the sports, clubs, lessons, volunteering, and other extracurricular undertakings you’ve been part of.
For most colleges, the activities section of the application can provide a detailed snapshot into what you choose to do with your time outside of school...assuming that you put in the effort to make sure the details are there.
The primary mistake that many students make is in assuming that admissions readers already know exactly what a certain activity or position entails. Students often also forget to list everything that they’ve done for the organizations that they participate in.
Give your activities some considerable time and thought. Perhaps your soccer team not only went to state championships, but you helped to organize and promote a fundraiser at school to help secure the travel funds.
While Model UN is a widely known organization, what events did you participate in? What country did you represent, and what issue did you confront?
Once you complete the activities in your application, you may want to think about putting together a one-page resume, if you don’t already have one.
Here’s why: while much of the information will overlap with your activities section, many colleges still accept resumes as optional uploads. Going to the effort of putting one together can demonstrate a level of polish and professionalism that will set you apart.
Then, when that next application opportunity comes along — probably while you’re in college — you’ll be ready to jump on it!
